She did draw a flurry of interest in March, when she was mentioned as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp has to deal with an administration beset by numerous issues, including a president who is acting as his own director of communications as well as Cabinet Secretaries that are caught up in the controversies surrounding their respective departments. Schlapp has never strayed from her goals, and she worked closely to work closely with White House policy and political teams. So far, her focus is on topics like school safety, opioids and infrastructure, and trade. In her role, Schlapp is not in contact with a lot of reporters. However, she attracted a lot of media attention when she was mentioned as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. It's been a nasty fight. Schlapp's allies fought with Tony Sayegh over the media. Schlapp stated that after the Washington Examiner ran a story that contained negative comments about Sayegh, she had a discussion with Sayegh.
